Splurge vs. Save

So I splurged on something big.

No, not groceries.  I'll tell you about that later.

It all started with Design*Sponge.  I'm a huge fan so of course I read the blog daily and I'm super fascinated by Grace's story and how she started the blog and built it into this thriving business with 60,000 readers a day.  Inspiring right?  Well she sent out a post about how she wanted to get into consulting and was asking for readers to fill out a questionnaire to help her pinpoint her services (with the chance to win a free session).  So I did it thinking I would learn a bit about my own blog and business.  Then she started sending us (the group of people who responded to the questionnaire) really cool videos about how she got started, time management and other strategies that help her in her biz life.

Then last week she announced a small number of spots for email and Skype coaching for your biz/blog.  Well, I just couldn't resist the opportunity to get some mentorship from such a success so I splurged!  I had to fill out a lengthy Q&A and I will get a assessment and recommendations from Grace on how to improve.  I'm very excited to hear what she has to say!

Soooo....needless to say I'm looking to cut back in other areas to make up for it.  So I'm trying out a tip I got from the always inspiring Eva over at EvaEvolving.  It's a grocery shopping moratorium on everything except the basics.  So you buy your milk, eggs, bread...but nothing else.  Then meal planning is all done using what you have in your fridge, freezer and cupboards plus your creativity and imagination!  J and I are going to give it a go this weekend and see how it goes.

Hopefully I save a few pennies here and there to balance out my splurge.

What's your biggest saving tip to make up for your favourite splurge?

  3. Good for you- I love Grace's blog and I love how she still comments- Sometimes very popular bloggers cease to comment back- She has commented on my blog which made me feel super special so I am really excited for you!

RE: Grocery Shopping just basics- This is something I do every month- the week before I do a Costco shop- I grew up with my parents doing this too- I call it the week before Costco meals-

  4. Wow, Lenore! I'm excited for you - and can't wait to hear about it. This is one of my favorite things about the web: finding other bloggers you admire and who are also willing to generously share their expertise.

Thank you for mentioning my post! I think this is the perfect approach. Finding ways to save where you can in order to earn something you really, really want. Very wise!

  6. Awesome Lenore - that's going to be a great experience!

You should blog about some of these meals you're going to make with basics + cupboard findings. I bet you'll do things you never thought you would with ketchup :)

Once my nan made me tomato soup for lunch, but really, all she did was add ketchup to water. It was disgusting, but I remember it well. xo

  7. Hahaha! That made me laugh out loud B...not to be a princess, but I think J and I will be eating a little better than Ketchup Soup! But kudos to your nan for truly stretching a dollar!

No folks, not top secret! I'll be sharing it all with you along the way.

  9. I keep meaning to do pantry/freezer cooking but never get around to it! I need to better organise my pantry. I was reading the Organized Home book recently from the library and found a great resource in their website: http://organizedhome.com/printable/household-notebook You can print off the freezer/pantry inventory pages then you write down a product and put one slash for having it, then another slash to cross it out when it's used. Helps you keep track of what exactly it is that you have in the house.
