Who am I?

My blogging identity is in a bit of a crisis.  I can’t figure out who I am in the blogosphere.

As a control freak, this makes me very uncomfortable.  I like to have a handle on things.  I like to KNOW.  Because then I can plan (oh joy do I love planning!).

But I’m quickly learning that I don’t know much when it comes to this new thing called a blog.  And that I need to be patient, go with the flow, RELAX.  Don’t you hate it when people say that?  Like duh!  I would if I could.

Some days I like to blog about pretty things.  Some days I like to tell you what’s going on in my life.  Some days I like to share with you interesting nuggets I’ve discovered on other blogs.  Some days I get all journalist-y on you and give you itemized lists.

But I feel disjointed.  Like I can’t focus, so I’m just rambling.  Do you ever feel that way?

I know I’m all those things (girly, deep, curious, wannabe, etc.).  So why can’t I accept that my blog is going to be all those things?

I just really admire those bloggers who seem to be really ‘have it together’ with a super niche topic that generates lots of amazing conversations.  Maybe I just want too much too soon?  Patience is not my virture!

I just have to focus on the fact that I’m writing.  Often.  Even if it’s just little bits here and there, my thoughts are becoming my words and that was the ultimate goal.

First of all, I’d like to thank you for reading.  You have no idea how much it means to me to know that someone is out there.  Secondly, thank you for commenting.  It makes me feel like this could really grow into something.  I’m loving finding all the new blogs out there and seeing what people are saying.  I feel a little like the kid in the playground ‘hi I like your blog.  Do you want to read mine?’ but it’s so great to push myself out of my comfort zone and go initiate contact.

On those days when it feels like I’m talking to myself, I’m going to just keep talking.  Maybe I’ll get more focused.  Maybe I won’t.

That’s okay.  Because I’ll be doing what I love.  Writing.

The Comfort Zone

I'm a writer.

It took me 18 years to finally say this.  But I finally believe it in my heart and feel comfortable telling people.

Does this mean I write 23 hours a day?  Nope.  Does this mean I've got a row of published novels perched on the shelves at Chapters?  Sadly no.  Does this mean I think about writing as much as I think about breathing?  Sure do.

It didn't start out that way.  Although I was drawn to english classes and earned praises from my teachers, I didn't think I was a writer.  Although I published my first international magazine article at age 20 while living in England, I didn't think I was a writer.  Although I spent 10 years freelancing on everything from restaurant reviews to band interviews to business profiles, I didn't think  I was a writer.  But yet I always thought about writing...

I've read almost every book on the subject - from Stephen King to Writing a Novel for Dummies.  I've taken courses.  I read a novel a week and every magazine, newspaper and flyer I can find lying around.  I've started six novels, some sad bits of poetry, 2 plays....the list goes on.

I have an uncle who's a writer and he told me that non-writers don't spend all their time thinking about writing.   So I HAD to be a writer.  Still didn't believe him.

What changed?  A few things.  I got a little older.  I got a little more comfortable with who I am.  I quit the job that didn't satisfy me and looked and looked until I found one that did, copywriting for an advertising agency.  Now I get to geek out thinking about words and meanings all day!

Then I discovered blogging.  And it has literally changed my life.

Because I have the attention span of a knat.  And I can never commit to one idea.  And I can be lazy.  So writing little bits here and there on the blog is the most perfect medium for me.

But a funny thing happened when I started blogging.  I started to get more inspired for my writing in general.  Duh, probably because I'm actually writing every day (even if it's in small chunks).  But also because of the community I'm building.  I'm finding blogs I love, that really get my thinking and conversing.  And others are finding me, and joining in my conversation.  I'm truly inspired!  I'm thinking about my writing again and what I want to say and how I'm going to do it.  I will write a book one day, and I have a funny feeling this blog is going to help me get there.

Next post I'm going to share my blogging goals for 2010...in hopes that 'putting it out there' will keep me on task!

What do you get out of blogging or reading blogs?  Does it reach beyond to other aspects of your life?  What are you finally comfortable calling yourself?

Oh happy day!

What a thrill!

A radio spot I wrote has won a silver award in the 2010 Summit Creative Award competition!

The spot was part of the fall campaign developed for local shopping destination St. Vital Centre by Fusion Advertising Agency, where I work as a copywriter.  You can listen to the full radio spot here.

Celebrating its 16th year, the Summit Creative Award spotlights works created by small and mid-size marketing firms around the globe.  There were thousands of entries from 24 countries with an amazing panel of judges including international ad agencies like Ogilvy B2, Saatchi&Saatchi, Pixel & Co. Creative Marketing, Stellar Debris and more!

I was too excited not to share!

Beautiful Women

I do occasional freelance writing for Winnipeg Women.  It's a great local magazine about women and lifestyle.

Every year Winnipeg Women profiles incredible women in their Winnipeg's Most Beautiful Women issue.  I had the pleasure of interviewing and writing about Bev Larmour and Sharon Taylor.

Local photographer Ian McCausland shot the ladies for the cover of this very special issue.

Winnipeg Women and other Studio Publication titles have recently launched as a digital publications, so you can now read entire issues of the magazine online.

Check out my profiles of the women here.
