Furniture Cheat Sheet: The Club Chair

Well, the city is a winter wonderland! We got our first big snowfall through the night and I'm so glad it's Friday since all I can think about is curling up at home in a big comfy chair!  Reading, baking, sleeping in....isn't nasty weather the best excuse ever to do all the things you love?

In my twenties, I search high and low for a club chair to do my reading. I had always wanted one and I thought they were the perfect antidote to my often-overly girly style. I found one many years back at Homesense on a deep discount and I've loved it ever since.  There's something about chocolate brown leather that just ages so nicely. I hope to have it for years to come!

As far as modern versions go, I've been seeing this amazingly gorgeous creature from Crate & Barrel all over the place.  From blogland to magazine ads, this has sure caught my eye!  And why wouldn't...isn't is just the coziest looking thing you've ever seen?  A mug of hot chocolate, a wool throw, my favourite novel....yes, yes I can see it now.  Well, maybe not with the $2500 price tag.  But I sure love fantasizing about it!

If leather's not your thing, there are amazing overstuffed fabric versions out there. I quite love this more feminine and curvy version of the club chair with it's lovely sage green uphostery. The wood base is a nice touch too!

Furniture Cheat Sheet: The Wishbone Chair

Hello there and Happy Friday! I hope you're all well? I took today off to luxuriate in a four-day weekend and I'm loving every minute of it!  I plan to do lots of puttering...how about you?

Today we're talking about a mid-century modern classic - the wishbone chair.  Keep your eye out for reproductions, these open and airy dining chairs would be perfect for an eat in kitchen or a more casual dining area!

Manufacturer Carl Hansen released a new series of the classic design this year in vibrant shades, as part of the 'citrus' 'blue' and 'energy' collections.  I am LOVING these!  Especially the blue ones because they're in all my favourite shades.

Did you hear about the Pink Wishbone Project? Last month SuiteNY auctioned off pink wishbone chairs restyled by famous designers in support of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.  I think the modern shape looks so girly and chic in blush pink.  Plus what a great cause!

Furniture Cheat Sheet: The Adirondack Chair

Happy Friday friends!  Even though we are settling into winter, I'm dreaming about my absolute favourite chair....This chair is part of my daily retirement fantasies.  They involve me, a paperback book, a glass of wine, a dock, a body of water, a warm breeze and the adirondack chair.  Yes - when I drift off to La La land you can find me at relaxing by the water (for now the lake, one day - the ocean!).  Here's your cheat sheet:

When Jack and I take our little fishing boat out in the summer, we often cruise by cabins that have a row of colourful Adirondacks.  They look like they are just waiting for someone to take a load off!

Furniture Cheat Sheet: The Windsor Chair

It's pouring rain here and the forecast is that it will turn into snow over the next day or two.  Blech! I always get a sense of anxiety with the first snowfall, more because of driving on the icy roads in traffic.  But I'm trying to stay upbeat and not let it get me down.

For now, I will head over to my happy place - talking about furniture!  Today's cheat sheet is all about the Windsor chair.  If you're not already familiar with this one, you will be when you see the pic.

They're a very popular dining room set chair, my mom has an oak set.  But of course, knowing me - I see potential for a classic style in a beautiful bright colour...like these gorgeous modern interpretations of the traditional Windsor.  These were designed by Chris Specce for Matter and I love the pared down design and chic blue and black colours.

Furniture Cheat Sheet: The Bentwood Chair

Happy Friday friends!  Thanks a bunch for all your words of encouragement regarding my back pain.  Gawd I feel like an old lady saying that!  But really, just knowing you're sending me good thoughts makes me feel better.

For today's furniture cheat sheet, we're talking about the bentwood chair.  It's on my mind because I picked one up at the Red Barn Sale I attended a month or so back.  Mine is made of wood with an old red leather seat.  It's sitting in my studio, waiting to be transformed but I'm daunted by the idea of recovering a round seat...

Furniture Cheat Sheet: The Ladderback Chair

Hey there happy Friday friends!  I'm super excited to introduce a new column to you today, called the Furniture Cheat Sheet.  Even though I've been scouring thrift stores and flea markets for fab furniture finds for many years,  I've really struggled with identifying the pieces I see.  Without a background in any kind of furniture study, how do you really know? 

I want to know the era and the history behind the furniture style, even if it's an interpretation or a more modern reproduction.  I want to recognize influences at a glance!  Sure I've picked up knowledge here and there, but  I've also started doing a bit more research into it - so I can be a better informed furniture treasure hunter!  I thought you might be interested in what I'm learning too.
