In the meantime, let's talk weddings. One trend I'm really liking on the wedding blogs is the vintage birdcase as card holder. This one over at Style Me Pretty especially caught my eye...I love the creamy white shade, girlish ribbon and printed label.

So...I was super jazzed to stumble across this reproduction bird cage at a local thrift shop for a mere seven bucks. It's a little on the small side but I think I just might be able to make it work! You know I love a little DIY... But first things first, the awful dark colour. That just won't do - so I plan to pick up some creamy white spray paint and give it a few good coats to lighten it up. I might even rough it up a bit to give it more of a vintage feel. Then a printed card sign, maybe some of the turquoise twine and voila! My own stylish wedding card holder!
What do you think friends? Should i keep it solid or distress it? If you had a card holder on your special day, what did you use?

I'd say distress it. But I'd do a reddish-brown layer first, then the cream, so that when it's distressed it looks a little like rust underneath, to give it more depth. The cream with go better with the turquoise ribbon, too :)

ReplyDeleteWe had people fill out cards and hang them up on twine with clothes pins....but we got married in a barn :)
ReplyDeleteI say definetly paint it, but I would use a color, something soft like robins egg blue with cream ribbon. the cage is a very nice idea.
ReplyDeleteI think that is a fab idea! Out of the ordinary, special touches is what your friends and family will remember on your special day! I like the idea of using color too, like Amanda said. Can't wait to see what you do with it!

ReplyDeleteI was just thinking of taking a high grit sandpaper sponge to it once the paint is fully dry. This will rub off some of the paint and reveal the metal underneath. Then I would spray it with an aerosol water-based polyurethane to seal it up!
