Lather in The Globe and Mail

Happy Friday everyone! I hope you're all having a good week? No bump style peeks for me this week...it was a bit of a rough one. I was lucky enough to sail through my first trimester and the second seems to be getting it's payback. It's been a fun week of round ligament pain, dizzy spells, headaches and generally feeling weak and blah. Luckily I'm feeling better today and hope to have a relaxing weekend with friends and family.

I did want to share this article that came out last weekend in The Globe and Mail Style section. I was interviewed on the topic of plus-size clothing availability in Canada and needless to say - I had much to talk about. There were a few minor discrepancies - like the fact that I'm only 5'11" and not 6'2". Also the other bloggers mentioned were not named by me, but I'm glad to see the community out there.

It's a topic that requires a lot more discussion and thought and I feel that there are so many different angles to the story and everyone's opinion differs. It's not even the fact that there aren't plus size clothing available - it's more that they tend to be more frumpy, less quality and cut very oversized in areas that need not be (armholes anyone??). Sometimes I get embarrassed to talk about it - because I'd like for people not to focus on my body/size on a tag but on my personal style. I don't think it's wrong to want to wear what the other 90% of stores are selling but know that you won't be able to fit into the largest size they have...

But the more discussion we have, the more doors it may open. Because don't we all deserve to wear cute clothes and feel good about ourselves - no matter what our size?

What are your thoughts friends? I know there are many of you out there who struggle, whether you are petite, plus-sized, athletically-built, small with a large bust, etc. Just know that you are ALL beautiful.

Have a lovely weekend friends!

  1. Congrats on the feature! So neat! I do find it hard to find cute plus size clothes. I've had to start ordering from Forever 21, asos, Dorothy Perkins and New Look, which typically fit really well and don't have the somewhat unflattering cut that Addition-elle does.

  2. If I may, about the painful ligaments, I was followed by my chiropractor for both my pregnancies and she sis wonders for those types of pains. You may want to give it a go.

Congratulations on the article! I agree, it is sometimes tough to find cute clothes in larger sizes. I am very self conscious about my shape and I don't feel comfortable enough to even go into stores I think might not have my size. Trauma from high school when the cool tiny girls worked in those stores and gave me dirty looks when I stepped in the store me thinks. (Why can't H?&M have sizes above 12?) But the possibilities are getting way better.

    1. Thanks so much for the tip Gwenyver, it really seems to be one of those things that will come and go. I'm enjoying extra massages!!

I say let the trauma go, we all deserve to look great.

  3. I definitely find it hard to find cute clothes in larger sizes. And it seems terrible that some of the very mainstream brands that do carry larger sizes will only carry those sizes online so you can't try it on to make sure the fit is good...drives me crazy! I don't mind shopping online but I do prefer to try them on first :)

Thanks so much for your blog Lenore - I love your style and it gives me lots of inspiration! I am looking forward to your post-partum style as well. I had my first baby 19 months ago and am still searching for my style :)

  4. Hi Lenore, I actually just found your blog because of the Globe and Mail article. It was exciting to see a girl with curves and style and I have been inspired by your outfit ideas. Until reading your blog I had no idea about American Eagle jeans or even the asos website, which I have already placed an order. I have found it increasingly difficult to find clothing with a youthful vibe that suited my personality and that would actually fit my pear shape. Thank you for the inspiration!

BTW, I am also looking forward to seeing your bump style evolve as I am 12 weeks pregnant, also expecting my first child.

  5. Enjoyed the article so had to check out your blog! I just visited our new Target store here (Toronto) and couldn't find any plus-size stuff, although I gather from the "Manatee Grey" scandal that it exists somewhere in their chain... just tried an online store called one-stop plus in the US, but discovered that the sizing is more generous than what I'm used to so found myself swimming in a couple of shirts but the quality was good and the other shirt I bought was very flattering. Am loving all the ruffles and draping that a lot of shirts have this year.
I will definitely check this blog, and congrats on your pregnancy!

  6. I'd love to see the day when "plus-sized fashion" is no longer a common term (although I won't hold my breath). Why can't it just be called "fashion" plain and simple, no matter the size? (And don't get me started on brands that refuse to offer a complete size range for all styles.)

Congrats on the G&M feature! I actually found your blog via the Winnipeg City Guide post on Design Sponge - it's is my hometown but I haven't lived there in like 17 years... I'll be visiting soon and I always refer back to that post when trying to remember/think of things to check out :)
